part 1: the speech bubble
when i started here back in march, there were a few things I wanted to do right away. i wanted to have a fresh start; and i wanted our student ministry to have a fresh start, a fresh look, a fresh feel.
the ministry of the past; the past youth pastors and leaders, did a phenomenal job. they have worked well at bringing the ministry to the place it was at. and while I honour and respect the past, it's important to look ahead, move forward and begin to take steps.
among the changes i implemented (ie: name change, where we met, etc), i also immediately introduced a new logo. - a "speech bubble." why did I do that?
i wanted our logo to tell people what we were about. of course, we are about Jesus and discipleship and learning and hanging out and playing games and eating food. all of that is kind of a given when it comes to the idea of what a youth group is. so, why a speech bubble...?
because at SCF:youth.. conversation happens. it happens before the program even begins.. in the homes and in the classrooms of our students. it happens on the car ride. it happens in the lobby, gym and hallways of the church. it happens during the programming of the night.. and it happens after.
but the goal of the conversations WE have at (and for) SCF:youth should be with a purpose. every time a leader or student leader (yes.. you read that right.. student leaders and a learning track for them will be introduced soon...) has a conversation with another student or peer.. there should be a purpose.
we're not just here to "shoot the breeze"... we're here to get to know someone... to REALLY get to know someone.
we're here to be known. because relationships, friendships and conversations are a two way activity.. (have you ever tried to have an engaging conversation with someone that doesn't want to talk....??)
we're here to share our troubles and joys, our sorrows and pains, our celebrations and exciting news.
we're here to have more than just a shallow "how ya doin'" conversation.. but to have real, honest, heart changing chats that will help students know that we care for them, love them and are with them... daily.
and to add to ALL of that, it's also to signify and.. honestly.. remind us.. that we are to have daily conversations with God. and if a student .. if you're ... at a place where you don't know what that looks like.. or why we do.. or even how.. then you've come to the perfect place. because at SCF:youth... we'll be happy to talk with you about all of that!
as we move forward towards the coming fall semester, let us think of this each time we see this logo... it's more than just a picture. it's a reminder of who we are and why we're here. it's a symbol of what we're all about..
conversations with God.
conversations with each other.
and conversations that will change our world!
