part 2: the umbrella
so, in the first part of this blog series "the significance of" i shared why I was drawn to the idea of a "speech bubble" as a logo for our student ministry... if you haven't read that blog post yet, i want to encourage you to go back and read it.. HERE.
this week, i wanted to share why i'm drawn to another logo that you may be seen around.. "the umbrella."
let's stop and think for a moment. what exactly IS an umbrella. (side note: it is NOT a form of a parachute. if you have watched Mary Poppins.. and tried the same trick she did.. don't. you won't have the same results. #sharingforafriend)
an umbrella is a covering. a form of protection. an instant safe place.
an umbrella is used in the obvious times of wind, rain, storms.
an umbrella is also used in the fun times (.. think: beach. sun. surf. sand. shade.)
so the question may be being asked.. "why are you thinking of an umbrella when you think of SCF:youth, andy?"
well.. allow me to dive in a little bit deeper.
every student ministry is filled with students who are:
not only are student ministries filled with those individuals... but those students also know others who are just like them.
students need a community. a safe community. a protected community.
a community where they can come and share their greatest joys, accomplishments, successes and moments in life.
a community where they are allowed to shine, free from judgement and ridicule.
a community where they can come when the world around them is crumbling.
a community where they know they will have wise advice, shoulders to cry on or just someone to keep them company so their not alone.
and so this... this is what i envision for SCF:youth. this is the target that i am aiming at. this is what i want our group .... our ministry .. to be.
a loving, welcoming, caring group that is known as a safe, protected community that all are invited to.
the following idea/philosophy/targets were inspired by Orange; a curriculum ministry that specializes in kids, students and family ministry.
if you look at the picture of the umbrella on this blog post, you'll see 5 panels. 5 panels that make up one umbrella. 5 panels that are connected to one handle.
allow me to explain.
in SCF:youth, we will strive to help students.
through those 5 areas (or.. panels of the umbrella...) we will aim to help them Know who God is, Become like Jesus and Change our world.
does that sound familiar?? Know, Become, Change. three words that Sauble Christian Fellowship has made our goals, our targets as a church body.
i (andy) have always been a firm believer that any ministry in the church should not be a silo of itself.. but rather, should be linked to, connected to and on the same discipleship path of the main church body.
so, while we will help students, guide students and disciple them to (hopefully) achieve those 5 areas.. we will do ALL of that with the main goals of "Know, Become, Change" as the main target.
let's look back at the umbrella. consider the handle to be the church.. to be the "Know, Become, Change."
each panel is connected to it. but that's what holds us all together.
so.. while a student is in our student ministry... they will be covered with the teaching, the ideas, the goals of helping them to Connect, Decide, Examine, Grow and Serve.. all the while teaching them to Know, Become, Change.
until next time...
